Our next destination was Laveno, a car ferry terminus that connects with Intra, a city on the other side of the lake. Laveno’s other feature is a cable car up Monte Sasso del Ferro — 3,484 feet and this is why Jim was eager to go here. Excitement turned into trepidation as the cable cars revealed themselves to be 45 gallon “buckets” welded to tubular steel coat hangers, each holding two passengers. As thrilling as the sixteen-minute ride up the mountainside was, it was topped by the trip back down two hours later. (We stroked that off our bucket list!) As we were now guilty of defrauding a bus driver by “riding and running” (shuffling, in our case), travel on Autolinee Varesine was no longer an option, so we lumbered the eight kilometers through a maze of asphalt back to Santa Caterina to catch our return ferry to Stresa.

| Leaving the terminal and holding on tight! |
| Up we go! The other buckets had no passengers. Note: the top of the mountain is not visible yet. |
| We made it to the top! What a view! |
| Going down was even more of a thrill! |
