Cinco Caminos – Stage 32: Corme to Praia de Niñons (18 km) 13 - 20°C – sunny with high winds

By Jim

The walk to the lighthouse at Cape Roncudo was bracing.  Yesterday’s wind had increased and was now blowing 40 - 50 km/h and the surf was pounding.  We were all alone except for a couple of fishermen.  Near the lighthouse were three crosses each commemorating the death of a percebes (barnacle) harvester.

We had planned to walk the coastal path to Niñons Beach but when we turned the corner at the lighthouse, the wind gave us second thoughts.  After consulting our map we found a series of windmill maintenance roads that ran parallel to the coast, a safe distance from the cliffs.  We christened our new route the Camino dos Ventos, the Way of the Windmills.  We arrived at our destination by 12:00, and sat in the shade of a large boulder watching the families enjoy the beach.

The closest accommodation we could find (a four bedroom house) was about 15 km away so we called a taxi for a lift to Seirugo, a town with no services.  We dined on a supper of chicken noodle soup with tuna and flat green beans from our backpack larder.

Leaving Corme this morning.

Faro de Roncudo and memorials to fishermen who perished harvesting percebes.

We followed our own Camino dos Ventos (windmills) today.

Our destination, Niñons Beach.
