We had breakfast with the couple from Vancouver (Peter and Anne) and were further amazed by them when they informed us that Peter has a pace-maker and Anne has had both hips and both knees replaced. They are using a pack-transferring service for the first time on this, their seventh Camino; again, I say: wow!
Today’s trail involved more pavement and a couple of big hills. The first one led up from Pontedeume and the second hill brought us to the half-way point of today’s route. By this time, the day was very warm and the sun was melting us as we trundled up the incline. I was feeling a bit defeated by the situation, when at the crest of the hill to our utter surprise and delight appeared patio tables, chairs, umbrellas, and coolers full of cold drinks, all set up under the trees! A man graciously welcomed us and invited us to rest in the shade with a drink or piece of fruit, donativo. What a wonderful respite it was, boosting our energy and our spirits for the remaining ten kms. Upon reaching Betanzos, we ate a delicious fish lunch and then checked in to the public albergue located in the lively old town center.
