Pilgrim's Lament

Croissants and cake for breakfast,
Churros at coffee break;
Bocadillos for a midday lunch,
Do happy pilgrims make.
Menú del Día vary.
But three foods haunt every place:
Pan and patatas fritas;
Torta, if you have space.
How can we walk 800K
and still manage to gain weight?
The answer to this puzzle?
One word: Carbohydrates!
