Cinco Caminos – Stage 34: Ferrol to Fene (17 km) 13 - 20°C – overcast and muggy

By Jim

We left Malpica early and a couple of buses later we were standing in the center of A Coruna, a bustling city of 250,000.  For nearly six weeks we have been walking through rural Spain — farms, villages, towns, and small cities.  A Coruna was a shock – the traffic and heat (26°C) were overwhelming.  By 11:00 we had retreated to our hotel room to spend our rest day resting in air conditioned comfort.  In the early evening, we did manage to go out for a walk to the Tower of Hercules (the only fully preserved Roman lighthouse that's still in use today).

At 5:30 this morning we left the hotel to catch a train for Ferrol and then begin the Camino Ingles, a hundred-plus km walk to Santiago de Compostela.  We joined the trail just outside the train station at 8:00, stopping only briefly for cafe con leche at a small bar near the water front.  It was a relief to be back on an inland Camino without the worry of cliffs and wind but it didn’t take long for me to start to grumble about hills and pavement.  Throughout the day we saw about 35 other pilgrims.

  1. Beautiful setting for a city and I love the scupture of the surfers. Last legs of your journey. I hope that you aren't on your last legs;)
