Cinco Caminos – Stage 35: Fene to Pontedeume (10 km) 16 - 21°C – foggy, then overcast and muggy

By Laurel

This was a short and uneventful day.  Due to the locations of our accommodations last night and tonight, our distances did not even out for these first two days and today was especially short.  One nice aspect of the situation was that we were able to take our time eating breakfast and do “Wordle” before hitting the trail.  Our route was mostly on pavement, but did involve walking through forest for a while and a couple of hills.  It’s pretty much an urban area and we could hear traffic all along the way — even in the forested section, the highway was not far off.  We strode into Pontedeume at 11:30 a.m. but could not check into our accommodation until 2:00 p.m., so we put our time to good use by going to a laundromat and a bar/cafe, leaving with a backpack full of clean clothes and stomachs full of food.  We’re ready for a longer hike tomorrow.

We did not see any other pilgrims on the route today, but we met two in the evening who are staying at the same accommodation as we are.  They are a couple from Vancouver, doing their seventh Camino!  The husband is 81 and the wife is in her late seventies — wow!

Top:  walking in trees one minute; Bottom:  on pavement a minute later.

Stop and smell the roses.

The sign suggested a variant route, so we took it.

  1. Haha Laurel, not too many people would say that a 10 km walk was a very short one! Great feeling when it does feel short though.

    1. There were quite a few of those recommended variants on the Invierno as well, mostly to avoid traffic. We appreciated them. I can’t believe you guys are only a few stages away from Santiago! Do you feel like you are going in circles?

    2. Well, at times I feel like I’m on automatic pilot! Going from km marker to km marker! Yes, I can hardly believe we’re this close now.
