Today’s stage is described in the Wise Pilgrim Guide as the most difficult of the entire Primitivo and nicknamed the “leg wrecker” for its steep descents. It rained all night and was still raining when we had our breakfast, so we decided to catch a bus to avoid the most treacherous parts. We whiled away our time waiting for the bus in a quaint athletic club/bar across the street from the stop. The trip was exciting, as the bus sped along the narrow, hilly, winding road slick with rain. When it finally let us off at Lastra, my heart was already pounding and up to walking speed.
The short walk was made shorter when we were joined by an Australian couple attempting a 30 km stage. Our fresh legs managed to keep pace with their flagging ones. The path was wet and windy, but not cold. The views were grey so my camera stayed in my pocket for most of the walk. Arriving in town early gave us time to stock up on groceries (tuna, crackers, UHT chocolate milk, and fruit) and sample the free pintxos on offer at the local bar.
