Cinco Caminos – Stage 16: Vilar de Cas to Lugo (17 km) 10°C – rain and mist

By Jim

Yesterday’s shorter day meant that today’s walk was also shorter as we wanted to stop in Lugo for a rest day.  The stage was wonderful:  cool, green, flat, and under four hours.  In 2016 the Galician government installed new stone markers to keep the pilgrims on track.  Although these markers do not seem to follow the custom of aligning the lines of the scallop shell so that they converge in the direction of Santiago, they do provide an arrow and three decimal place accuracy of the distance to Santiago.  At the same time, routes through Galicia were tweaked to follow a modern route that includes some new villages and supports such as protected paths that adjoin highways.  Although most of today’s trail was wooded secondary farm roads, we appreciated the new supports along the short section of highway that we did walk.  The path kept Lugo hidden from sight until we were about 1.5 kms from its center.

The trail today was cool, wet…

…and of course, green!

The trail markers in Galicia do not always follow the convention of converging the scallop shell lines toward Santiago.  Note that in the left example the scallop lines converge in the direction of the arrow (Santiago) and in the right example they do not.

Lugo was well hidden until we were almost upon it.

The official end of each stage is usually a church, in this case the Lugo Cathedral (St Mary’s).
