Day 6 of … rain. Luckily, for the first four days of this wet stretch, while we were out walking the precipitation was light, intermittent, or only really started to rain more significantly as we got near our destination of the day. So we never got drenched. Yesterday and today — different story. We arrived looking like drowned rats. It’s a challenge to get things dried out by morning; fortunately, today we had a laundromat just across the town square.
Day 2 of the Camino Verde. Mud, so much mud! We set out from Friol following the painted green arrows, which directed us down consecutive country lanes. On a sunny day, it would have been lovely, green, and shady. Today, the trails were side-to-side ankle-deep water, mud, and mucky troughs formed by tractor tires and cows. It was an incredibly slow and unpleasant effort to pick our way through. And it was raining steadily. After 6 kms of this craziness, we reached a paved road and, ignoring the green arrows trying to send us down additional muddy farm lanes, we stuck to the roads until we hit the Camino del Norte and its gravel path to Sobrado. We are staying at the Albergue in the monastery.
We wanted to avoid the crowds on the Camino Frances by taking the Camino Verde instead, but wondered if we would be the ONLY ones on this alternate route. Such was not the case. On Day 1, we met a Polish pilgrim staying at the same pension in Friol and on Day 2, we walked part way mid-route with a German woman. We speculated that we also saw three or four others in Friol. So — not crowded, but not deserted, either.

Yucky weather! It is also raining here in Quebec in sympathy with your journey. First preseason game is against Winnipeg on Monday. Wear Green!

DeleteAm i correct that you will now be doing seis caminos?
ReplyDeleteTechnically, yes, it should be — as we actually made it through the Camino Verde! Snails can’t count, haha.
