Cinco Caminos – Stage 23: Olveiroa to Cee (20 km) 8 - 16°C – full sun, blue sky

By Laurel

We thought we saw the dreaded Vakner on our way to Cee today, but fortunately it was only a likeness of the beast.  A long time ago, in the year 1493, a pilgrim from Armenia, who happened to be a bishop, wrote about seeing the frightening werewolf-like creature while on his way from Santiago de Compostela to Finisterre.  According to legend, the local population had already been shaken by the presence of the being which had terrorized people and prevented groups as large as twenty pilgrims from passing by on the Camino.  That was over 500 years ago — nowadays, the only sighting is of the statue in the woods.

What a nice walk we had today!  The sun shone all day (finally) along our shady trail, with only minor stretches of full sun on us.  A few kms before we reached the town of Cee, we saw the ocean — blue in the distance.  We’ll definitely be seeing more of that in the next stages.

The scary Vakner.

A crystal clear stream, as we exited Olveiroa.

A close-up of the stream.

There were many windmills.

Blue sky!

Top:  We can see the ocean!  Bottom:  The town of Cee, our destination for today.
