Rest Day — Lugo (May 16, 2024) 13°C — overcast, drizzle

By Laurel

Lugo’s claim to fame is that it is the only city in the world to be surrounded by a completely intact Roman wall — an amazing structure which is a World Heritage Site.  The walls, dating from the third century, are 10 - 15 meters in height and are ringed with 71 towers.  The walk along the top is a 2.1 km continuous circuit and we can vouch that it makes for a great morning stroll.  Ten gates through the wall give access to the old city, and the Camino led us through one of them yesterday when we arrived.  Likewise, in impressive fashion, it will lead us out through another of the gates tomorrow, as we head out again on the Way of St. James.

The Cathedral in Lugo

Our Airbnb apartment is on the third floor and close to the rear of the Cathedral.

View from our apartment window, looking over Plaza Maior.

A look of the outside of the wall.

A gate through the wall and a ramp leading up to the top (in front of the Cathedral).

Morning stroll around the top of the wall.

View of the Cathedral, as seen from on top of the wall.

  1. So great to see these last three posts all on the same morning. The wall is amazing! Our engineers could learn something about construction... I can see why you had to write a comparison to the snail--even they knew where to rest.
