Sunday, May 5 - Rest Day: Oviedo

By Jim

It was dark and dreary, with periods of downpour.  The Leafs were just eliminated in overtime and I was feeling at one with the weather.   In an attempt to shake off the gloom, I decided to go ahead and prepare the breakfast that I planned for a Leafs victory — a Spanish bread omelette.  Chopping and sautéing the onions, ham, tomatoes, and bread was therapeutic, the aroma of olive oil and garlic lifted my spirits.  When I went to add the eggs that I had purchased the day before, I discovered they were already hard boiled (mierda!).   So after a meal of fried bread we got the laundry done and splashed our way through Oviedo, stopping to photograph the many statues and churches that fill its streets.

    1. Thanks Lea. I have processed the five stages of grief and am now filled with hope and possibility for next season.

  2. We’re reading about big increases in numbers along the Frances and will be interested in whether that’s also true on the Primitivo.

    1. Good question — one young gal at our Albergue yesterday related how she had started walking from SJPDP and got as far as Estella, then bailed on the Frances due to the high numbers and she instead transferred over to the Primitivo. Our hospitalera said that there are quite a few pilgrims now choosing the Primitivo as their first Camino, which she said was rare before (and she attributed this to the high numbers on the Frances). So it’s interesting.
